How to eliminate interior styling mistakes that can cost you a fortune!

11 crucial points that will ensure you stop throwing money in the water!

Purchasing new furniture or use what you have can be challenging, use these 11 points to guide you through the process:

Plan before you start: Take time to think about the purpose of each room, and make a detailed plan of what you want to achieve in each space.

Consider the style and aesthetic you're going for and think about the overall style and aesthetic you're trying to achieve and choose furniture, decor, and accessories that fit with that style. Create a mood board, again I use Microsoft Powerpoint as it is an easy tool to add pictures and re-organise them. However you can also try Canva.com as they have a very easy to use platform to create your mood board. If you prefer, you can also make a real life one and collect pictures, colour swatches and fabrics to create a mood board. This will help you to stay on track and only purchase items that will work with you style.

Measure your space: Before you start shopping, measure your space and make a floor plan. This will help you understand the scale and proportion of the room and will give you an idea of what size furniture, decor, and accessories will work best. I have created a very simple floor plan on Microsoft PowerPoint to help with this task but you can also just draw it on a paper if you prefer.

Pay attention to scale: When choosing furniture and decor, be mindful of the scale of each item in relation to the room. Too large or too small items can make a space feel awkward and unbalanced. By creating a basic floorpan like I have created above, you will understand the size of items that are required.

Think about function: Consider the function of the room and choose furniture, decor, and accessories that are functional and practical for that specific space. If you are planning a rumpus room, think about storage solution for toys and games. Planning a home office should include furniture pieces that will allow you to seamlessly do your work and it can include furniture where you can place a pinter on, shelving for files and books and if you do many video calls, then you will have to ensure that you have an appropriate backdrop.

Consider the flow and layout of the room: Think about how the furniture, decor, and accessories will work together to create a cohesive and balanced look and how they will flow with the layout of the room. Take into consideration what the room will be used for, access to windows and doors and ensure your furniture don't obstruct the walking areas.

Use lighting to enhance the overall design: Lighting can greatly affect the atmosphere of a room and its overall look. Use lighting to create a balance of light and shadow and to highlight key elements in the room. Make sure to consider natural light, task lighting, and ambient lighting to create a balanced environment. Incorporating the right lighting is crucial to your design.

Avoid clutter: Overloading your home with too many items can make it feel cluttered and overwhelming. Instead, choose a few key pieces and simplify your space. Ensure you have one focal point, if you have more than one, they will compete for the attention and won't give the space a relaxed atmosphere. Remember, your eyes needs clear and empty spaces to rest on so don't fill every nook with something.

Choose a consistent color palette: Selecting a consistent color palette for each room will create a cohesive look and help eliminate mismatched decor.

Invest in quality: Cheaper options may seem tempting, but investing in high-quality pieces will save you money in the long run and give your home a polished look. However there are many ways of saving money with clever design so that you don't break the bank.

Be flexible: Don't be afraid to make changes if something isn't working. It's better to make small adjustments along the way than to have to completely redecorate down the line. I have seen this so many to time with people who have pieces of sentimental value and doesn't matter what we do it's not working with the style that we need to achieve. The only suggestion I can make is to perhaps use it in another location where it will be better suited.
